Every year youth and adults look forward to Vacation Bible School and this year was no different. Vacation Bible School 2014, held June 2nd through June 6th, brought the usual fun filled week and a little extra. The trendy theme “The Jesus Connection…What A Friend” incorporated the current generation’s use of electronic devices with biblical principles.
Though most of VBS is focused on classroom time the youth ages 1-18 always experience activities outside their classrooms. This year those activities included outdoor recess and arts & crafts. The arts & crafts department was definitely a highlight for VBS 2014. Every child and VBS volunteer experienced the process of making a tie-dye t-shirt.
During past years of VBS the kids never had the opportunity to display their art & crafts projects to the church. That all changed this year! As part of the new initiative to get Friendly families to participate as a unit, VBS Coordinator Missionary LaTonya Fortune came up with the idea of VBS Theme Nights which can be likened to school spirit days.
Monday night encouraged everyone to come out in their vacation gear. All the children received leis and adults could be found wearing sunglasses and wide brimmed sun hats. Tuesday gave families the chance to dress alike during twin or family photo night. If you are into vintage or retro attire then Wednesday’s old school theme was for you. Thursday proved to be a real congregation pleaser. Rep your school/sport fanatic theme night showed that Friendly members really know how to support their schools and sports teams. Friday is always Finale Night of VBS and also became tie-dye theme night. It served as a way for everyone to display their tie-dye shirts and the adults got to join in too by wearing bright colored shirts.
VBS averaged over 100 participants nightly. The youth did an outstanding job of bringing guests and participating in the theme nights. The refreshment department even showed extra creativity with vacation themed snacks such as fruit slushies and popcorn. Participants of all ages expressed their enjoyment of the different theme nights and the cohesion it brought. All in all Vacation Bible School 2014 was a major success.
